Captured some killer guitar tones using a Marshall head and cabinet, miked with a pair of Shure SM57s. To add extra grit and character, one signal ran through a vintage late-1980s Pearce BC-1 preamp for some additional distortion, which was then blended seamlessly with the pure, straight-from-the-amp signal.
The mics were positioned diagonally across the cabinet – one on the top-left speaker and the bottom right speaker – to avoid phase cancellation issues. This classic technique (famously used on Van Halen’s debut album) ensures that there any no phase issues, allowing for a fuller sound.
